He started it...

Yesterday, as I was working in the lab, I was reflecting upon my tendency to be argumentative. I was thinking about what my dad used to say when I would try to explain to him that it was my brother's fault that we had gotten into a fight. He would say--and you've probably heard it too--"It takes two to fight." The flip side of that, which is what I was thinking about yesterday, is that "It only takes one not to fight" (someone has probably said that as well). I think that's the key; I need to choose not to argue, and then at least this form of conflict can be avoided.

Does anyone else find themselves being argumentative?

Will you pray for me?

Michael

Yeah, I get very argumentative, but its in my genes so I can't change it ya know, its one of those things God gives you but you don't know why. You hate it but you can't change it.

Yeah, Stephen, I know what you mean. I feel like it's pretty ingrained in me too. I think I'm part shark and part pit pull. I'm like a shark, which when it smells the slightest hint of blood goes into attack mode; when I get the slightest hint of something to argue about I go into attack mode too! I'm like a pit pull in that I always go for the juggler, and once I chomp down my jaws, there's no letting go!

But these things are part of my sin nature. I'm thankful, though, that by the power of the Gospel, these things can be changed. Christ, by His death, has broken the power of sin:

"For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection, knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin; for he who has died is freed from sin" (Romans 6:5-7).

I don't want to be a slave to my argumentative self the rest of my life--and by Christ's death and resurrection I don't have to be!!!

And thankfully, Christ has given us His Holy Spirit, by which we are enabled to change by putting to death these sinful habits (like being argumentative!!!).

"So then, brethren, we are under obligation, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh--for if you are living according to the flesh, you must die; but if by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God" (Romans 8:12-14).

And most of all, I'm thankful that "He who began a good work in [me] will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus" (Philipians 1:6).

I'm working on developing strategies for putting to death the deeds of the flesh in this sinful area of being argumentative. Do you have any suggestions?

we'll I can't say I do have any suggestions, if your trying to put something together about putting earthly sins to death, I think its too hard, I mean after all, we have to live on earth our whole lives, so we will always be surounded by it.

I'm not so concerned about the sin around me, but rather the sin within me!!! Do you think that since the battle against sin (within ourselves, and as it comes out of ourselves) is hard, therefore we shouldn't fight it?

sorry about the late response, but to awnser, I think the fight against sin is one that is impossible to win, after all, if we could defeat sin, what good would Jesus dying on the cross do. Only God can defeat sin, therefore there is no point in trying to defeat it, however making strategies to prevent sin from even occuring is another thing, if we can create ways to prevent temptations from coming up, then we might have a head start on it.
